Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
